2 cm vs. 3 cm Countertops: Which Thickness Do You Need?

The short answer

A 2 cm slab is about three-quarters of an inch thick; 3 cm is about one and a quarter inches. MSI calls 3 cm the standard for kitchen countertops and islands: it sits directly on the cabinets, supports longer overhangs and allows deeper edges. 2 cm is lighter and suits vanities, backsplashes and walls, and on horizontal counters it goes on a plywood underlayment.

Kitchens and islands

MSI describes 3 cm as the standard for kitchen countertops and islands, with more resistance to impact and longer unsupported overhangs (MSI Surfaces). It also notes that older cabinets may need reinforcement to carry 3 cm stone. For granite, MSI recommends 3 cm outdoors as well (MSI Surfaces). For island seating, see our island overhang guide.

Bathrooms, backsplashes and walls

MSI suggests 2 cm for vanities, backsplashes and vertical work, and notes floating vanities often use it to keep weight down (MSI Surfaces). On horizontal counters, 2 cm needs a 3/4-inch plywood underlayment, and a laminated edge can make it look thicker. See bathroom vanity tops.

MSI has noted that California has traditionally used 2 cm granite more than other regions (MSI Surfaces), so you'll see both in Los Angeles kitchens.

Porcelain is thinner

Porcelain slabs follow a different scale: MSI's Stile slabs come in 6, 12 and 20 mm (MSI Surfaces). Our porcelain vs. quartz guide compares them.

Check the product

Not every stone comes in both thicknesses. Taj Mahal quartzite and Black Pearl granite are listed in 2 cm and 3 cm, while Absolute Black granite is listed in 3 cm. Each product page in our catalog shows the supplier-listed thicknesses.

FAQ

Common questions

Is 3 cm stronger than 2 cm?

It's thicker and, per MSI, more resistant to impact, with longer unsupported overhangs. A properly supported 2 cm counter is also a standard installation.

Can a 2 cm countertop look thicker?

Yes. MSI notes that a laminated edge, a second strip of stone along the front, makes 2 cm look thicker.

Which thickness for a bathroom vanity?

Either works. MSI suggests 2 cm for vanities and especially floating vanities, where weight matters. We make the top only; the cabinet comes from your supplier or contractor.
