Countertop Edge Profiles: How to Choose One
The short answer
The edge profile is the shape of the countertop's exposed front. Simple edges such as eased and bevel look clean and modern. Rounded edges such as bullnose are gentler if bumped and, per MSI, help reduce chipping. Decorative edges such as ogee suit traditional kitchens. Material and thickness limit the choice: MSI notes that ornate ogee edges are typically fabricated on 3 cm stone.

Common edge profiles
MSI's edge visualizer shows twelve profiles, from Eased and Bevel to Double Ogee and Dupont Bullnose (MSI Surfaces). The ones you'll hear most, as MSI describes them (MSI Surfaces):
- Eased (or standard): squared and straight top and bottom. Clean and modern, and one of the most commonly chosen edges.
- Bevel: an angled cut along the top corner.
- Half bullnose: rounded on top, straight below, so spills drip to the floor rather than down the cabinet fronts.
- Full bullnose: rounded top and bottom; gentler if bumped, and helps deflect knocks that cause chips.
- Classic ogee: a small straight cut leading into a gentle S-curve, often used in traditional rooms.
Match the edge to the room
Eased and mitered edges suit modern and minimal kitchens; bullnose suits busy family kitchens and bathrooms; ogee suits traditional rooms. MSI also points out that a busy, high-movement stone often looks best with a plain edge that doesn't compete with it. Waterfall islands use a mitered corner so the pattern turns down the side, which you can see in our waterfall island work.
Thickness and material
MSI notes that ornate ogee and waterfall edges are typically 3 cm, and that a laminated edge can make 2 cm quartz look thicker (MSI Surfaces). For granite it says full ogee and waterfall work need 3 cm (MSI Surfaces). Porcelain's pattern is printed on the surface, so simple or mitered edges keep it continuous; see porcelain vs. quartz.

FAQ
Common questions
What's the most popular countertop edge?
MSI calls the eased edge one of the most commonly chosen, because its simple, squared shape works with nearly any style.
Which edge is best for a home with kids?
A rounded edge such as a bullnose. MSI notes a bullnose is gentler if kids knock into it and helps deflect impacts that cause chips.
Does the edge profile affect cost?
It can. Detailed profiles and mitered build-ups take more fabrication time. See what affects countertop cost.
