Countertop guide

What Affects the Cost of Stone Countertops?

The short answer

The price of stone countertops depends on the material and the specific slab, how many slabs the layout needs, thickness, the edge profile, the number of cutouts, the backsplash, removal of existing tops and site conditions. That's why we price each project after measuring in your home rather than publishing a price list. The estimate is free, and it isn't a binding quote: final pricing follows templating and slab selection.

Material and the specific slab

Material is the biggest single variable, and within one material, individual slabs vary. MSI's own overview shows wide installed price ranges for each material, with quartzite generally toward the top (MSI Surfaces). The slab you approve is the one we fabricate, so its price is the one in your estimate.

Layout: how much stone the job needs

A long perimeter, a large island or a waterfall island uses more stone, and matching veins across pieces can mean using part of a slab for its pattern rather than its size. We plan the layout at templating to use material well.

Fabrication details

Edge profile, mitered edges, sink and cooktop cutouts and a full-height backsplash each add fabrication. All of it is done in-house, and your estimate lists what's included.

Ways to manage the budget

  • Put the statement slab on the island and use a quieter, less costly stone on the perimeter, a tip MSI also suggests (MSI).
  • Keep edge profiles simple where they won't be seen.
  • For simpler jobs, look at the prefabricated tops in our catalog.
  • Bring a slab you found at another yard; we can fabricate and install it.

FAQ

Common questions

Why don't you publish countertop prices?

Because the factors above vary so much from job to job that a list price would mislead. We measure in your home and give you an estimate for your actual layout.

Is the in-home estimate free?

Yes, free and with no obligation. We come to your home, measure and talk through materials.

Is the estimate the final price?

Not quite. Estimates aren't binding quotes; final pricing follows templating, slab selection and a review of the site.
