Countertop guide
How to Prepare for Countertop Templating and Installation
The short answer
Before templating, have your cabinets installed and level and your sink, faucet and cooktop chosen, with model details on hand. Decide on backsplash and overhangs, and clear the counters and a path to the kitchen before installation day. We template, fabricate and install the stone and prepare the sink opening; plumbing hookups are done by a licensed plumber you or your contractor arrange.

Before your free in-home estimate
- Gather any inspiration photos and slabs you've seen and liked.
- Think about how you use the room: where you prep, where people sit, what sits on the counter.
- If you're replacing countertops, note anything about the existing tops you want to change.

Before templating
Templating is the precise measurement every cut, seam and overhang is based on, so it happens once cabinets and walls are in.
- Cabinets installed, secured and level.
- Sink and faucet chosen; an undermount sink is ideally on site, or at least its exact model.
- Cooktop or range chosen, with the model details.
- Backsplash plan decided: a short splash, a full-height slab backsplash, or tile.
- Overhangs and seating at the island agreed.
If you're replacing old countertops
Removal and disposal of the existing tops can be part of the job; your estimate states exactly what's included. See countertop replacement for how it works on existing cabinets.
Before installation day
- Clear the counters, cabinet tops and the area around the kitchen.
- Make a clear path from the street to the room, and keep pets out of the way.
- Have the plumbing turned off or disconnected at the sink if your plumber is handling that.
- Plan for an adult to be home during installation.
After installation
We install the stone, set and level it, finish the seams and prepare the sink cutout for your plumber. Your plumber or contractor then connects the sink, faucet and any appliances. From there, follow the manufacturer's care guidance for your stone; our care guide is a good start.
FAQ
Common questions
Do cabinets need to be installed before templating?
Yes. Templating measures the cabinets and walls as they actually stand, so they need to be in place and level first. We don't install cabinetry ourselves.
Do I need my sink before you template?
Ideally, yes, especially for an undermount sink. At minimum we need the exact model so the cutout matches.
Who connects the plumbing after installation?
A licensed plumber that you or your contractor arrange. We prepare the sink opening; the hookups are theirs.
