Countertop guide

Outdoor Countertop Materials for Los Angeles Sun

The short answer

For an outdoor kitchen in full sun, look at granite, quartzite and porcelain, the three surfaces MSI offers for outdoor countertops. Keep engineered quartz indoors: MSI says its resin can yellow or fade with prolonged UV exposure. Granite and quartzite are natural stone and need an exterior-rated sealer; porcelain is non-porous and, per MSI, fade-proof. For granite outdoors, MSI recommends 3 cm.

What sun does to each material

MSI offers granite, quartzite and its Stile porcelain for outdoor kitchens, describing quartzite as resistant to scratches, weathering and UV, and porcelain as non-porous and resistant to sun, stains, scratches and heat (MSI Surfaces). Stile is listed as fade-proof and heat- and frost-resistant (MSI Surfaces).

Quartz is the one to skip: MSI says its resin may yellow or fade with prolonged sun exposure, so it isn't recommended outdoors (MSI Surfaces).

Sealing and thickness outdoors

For granite outdoors, MSI recommends 3 cm and an exterior-rated penetrating sealer, reapplied regularly (MSI Surfaces). Quartzite also needs periodic sealing; porcelain needs none.

Color and heat

Any stone in direct afternoon sun gets warm, and dark surfaces absorb more heat than light ones. If the counter sits in full sun, consider a lighter color or shade over the prep area.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I use quartz in an outdoor kitchen?

MSI doesn't recommend it, because the resin can yellow or fade with prolonged UV exposure. Granite, quartzite or porcelain are the outdoor options it offers.

Do outdoor stone countertops need sealing?

Granite and quartzite do: MSI recommends an exterior-rated penetrating sealer for granite outdoors. Porcelain is non-porous and needs no sealing.

Will a black countertop get too hot in the sun?

Dark stone absorbs more heat than light stone, so a black counter in full afternoon sun can get hot to the touch. Shade or a lighter color helps.
